Migraine Headache and Facial Pain
Migraine Headache and Facial Pain treatment with Sphenocath
If you suffer from migraine or cluster headaches, facial pain (called trigeminal neuralgia), or maxillary pain (i.e. upper tooth pain), this procedure is for you. This outpatient procedure only takes 15 minutes and does not require any needles. With the patient on his/her back, a fine anesthetic mist is applied in the nose. Using very limited real-time X-ray, our interventional radiologist easily slides a soft-tipped catheter into the correct spot in the nasal cavity to deliver the medication. The medication is absorbed through the thin mucosa overlying the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), a collection of nerves vital to the pain circuit for headaches. The medication allows for an immediate “reset” of the sphenopalatine ganglion through neuromodulation which results in ongoing pain relief. The national average number of treatments to remain pain free is 3.2 per year.
