Cancer Treatments
Our Interventional Radiologists at Advanced Radiology work very closely with Oncologists throughout the state of Nebraska. There are several cancer related procedures that are offered by our Interventional Radiologists:
US guided biopsy, cryoablation and radiofrequency of tumors, y-90 radioembolization and chemoembolization of liver tumors, port-a-catheter placement/removal, gastrostomy tube placement.
In many cases, the first step in cancer treatment involves a minimally invasive needle biopsy that is guided by a CT scan or ultrasound. A needle biopsy can be a safe procedure and can result in a precise biopsy sample. Not only do the interventional radiologists of Advanced Radiology aid in the diagnosis of a cancer, but they also are able to treat cancer.
Cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation are additionally minimally invasive procedures. By utilizing a special needle, the interventional radiologist can destroy tumors through thermal ablation (cryoablation by freezing and radiofrequency by heat). Both procedures are guided with imaging technology such as CT or ultrasound. Both procedures can be used to treat a variety of tumors including liver, kidney, lung, and bone tumors.
y-90 Radioembolization and chemoembolization are minimally invasive procedures for liver tumors offered by our interventional radiologists. Through the precise delivery of the radioembolic (y-90) or chemotherapeutic agent into the vessels that feed the tumor, the tumor is treated.
Using imaging guidance, such as X-ray and ultrasound, port-a-catheters and gastrostomy tubes can be placed very safely. A port-a-catheter is a medical device that is placed under the skin which allows easy access to the blood stream. For cancer patients who require multiple injections and blood samples, using a port-a-catheter makes the experience of treatment a bit easier.
