What are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine Fibroids are the most common type of benign (not cancerous) abnormal growths in the uterus. Common symptoms of uterine fibroids include:
- Heavy, prolonged or abnormal uterine bleeding
- Pelvic fullness, pressure, heaviness or pain
- Pain with intercourse
- Infertility
What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally-invasive alternative to surgical procedures such as hysterectomy and myomectomy. During uterine fibroid embolization, a small catheter (tube) is inserted into the wrist or leg and guided to the blood vessels that feed the fibroids within the uterus. Once in position, tiny beads are injected through the catheter to stop the blood flow to the fibroids. Once the blood flow to the fibroids has stopped, the fibroids gradually shrink over the next few weeks.
Uterine fibroid embolization is a very effective procedure with an approximate success rate of 85%. Recovery time is much faster than alternative procedures. Most individuals who undergo the procedure have a dramatic improvement in their symptoms; if menstruation was previously heavy or prolonged, it will usually return to normal after embolization. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recognizes UFE as a safe and effective treatment for fibroids. Nearly all insurance companies cover symptomatic uterine fibroids.
